**Quick answer:** What to wear on a cruise Caribbean comes down to three parts of the day. By day you wear light shorts, dresses and a swimsuit under a cover-up. In port you wear something you can walk in for hours. At dinner you change into smart casual, which means a sundress or a collared shirt, not a gown or a suit.

- **Sea days:** swimsuit, cover-up, sandals, hat. Cover the swimsuit before you walk into any dining area.
- **Port days:** breathable top, shorts or a loose skirt, walking shoes, sun protection.
- **Dinner:** yes, most people change. A sundress, jumpsuit or blouse with trousers for women, a polo or collared shirt with chinos for men.
- **Formal night:** most 7-day cruises host 1 or 2 of them. A midi dress or a blazer covers it.
- **The layer:** pack a cardigan, because the dining rooms and theaters are cold.
- **The carry-on:** put one full outfit in it, and add [baggage cover](/go/ekta/) in case the checked bag is late.

## What to wear on a Caribbean cruise, in one answer

Most people want one sentence before they read a page: do I change for dinner, and into what? Yes, you change, and the change is small. You go from swimwear or port clothes into smart casual. Most modern cruise lines have moved away from strict, formal ballgowns toward a smart casual style for dinner.

I have sailed nineteen times, and the same mistake shows up in the first week of every sailing. Someone walks into the dining room in a wet swimsuit under a thin cover-up, or in a jacket they did not need, or in shoes that hurt by the second port. This page fixes those three before you pack.

In passenger talk about dress codes, formal night comes up far more than anything else. The plain question “what do I wear to dinner on a normal night” is asked in only a handful of titles. It is the one that matters on six nights out of seven.

The rest of the page follows the day in order: deck, port, excursion, dinner, formal night. Then the shoes, the layer and the month. If you only need the packing count, jump to the table near the end. For everything that is not clothing, the [cruise packing list](/cruise-packing-list/) has it.

Flying in the day before? Dress for the plane the way you dress for port, and [compare flights to your departure port](/go/aviasales/) early enough to arrive a day ahead.

## Sea days on the ship: pool deck to lunch

A sea day is the most casual day of the sailing. Nobody checks what you wear between breakfast and the late afternoon. That is also why people overpack for it.

My sea day is built from four pieces, and the rest of the bag does not touch it:

- **Swimsuit:** the one you want to be wearing. Pack several so you never put on a wet one.
- **Cover-up:** a tunic, sarong or an oversized cotton shirt that takes you from the pool deck to the buffet.
- **Lounge layer:** a romper, a matching two-piece set, or shorts with a tee for walking around the ship.
- **Sandals and a sun hat:** slides are enough, and a wide brim does more than a cap.

Athletic dresses and skorts with built-in shorts are also worth a place if you walk the track or join a class. They dry fast and they do not ride up.

Here is the catch. A cover-up gets you to lunch, but it does not get you into the dining room for dinner. Cover your swimsuit before going into dining areas, and at the sit-down lunch spots a shirt and shorts over the suit is the safe default.

**Pro tip:** keep the day swimsuit on a hook by the balcony door so it is the first thing you see in the morning, not the last thing you find.

To make a sea day feel like a holiday, book one [ship-side spa or deck activity](/go/klook/) ahead and plan the outfit around it. For more ideas that only make sense once you are aboard, read [cruise ship hacks](/cruise-ship-hacks-that-only-make-sense-once-you-re-on-board/).

## Port days: heat, walking and the sun

Port days are where the outfit gets tested. You dress at seven, walk off the gangway at nine, and are still outside at one. What looked right in the cabin mirror is not always right in the sun.

The base is simple. Wear a breathable top, light shorts or a loose skirt, and shoes you can walk in. Breathable t-shirts, moisture-wicking shorts and comfortable walking shoes or sneakers are what you see on the people who still look fine when the ship sails.

The checklist I run through at the cabin door:

- **Top:** cotton or linen, loose, with the shoulders covered if you will be in the sun for hours.
- **Bottom:** shorts or a skirt you can sit in on a bench or a boat.
- **Shoes:** supportive sandals or sneakers. Break them in before the sailing, never on the first port day.
- **Bag:** a small crossbody that zips, with your cruise card and phone.
- **Sun kit:** a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.

If the day is a beach day, a swimsuit worn under a breezy dress, or a tank top with linen shorts, is the cleanest solution. You change nothing, you carry nothing, and you are in the water in two minutes.

Port days also decide your shoes more than any other day. I come back to that in its own section below.

Port days are walking days, so check the [walking tours and shaded excursions](/go/klook/) before you choose the shoes. The same logic, with cooler weather, is in the [Alaska cruise outfits guide](/alaska-cruise-outfits-for-weather-the-brochure-doesn-t-show/).

## Excursion days: what the cruise lines require

An excursion day is not a port day with a ticket. The activity decides the outfit, and some activities come with rules.

If you are ziplining, hiking or riding ATVs, the cruise lines require closed-toe sneakers and athletic clothing. Sandals do not pass at the check-in tent, however good they look in photos.

- **Active tours:** athletic shorts or leggings, a moisture-wicking top, closed-toe sneakers.
- **Water tours:** swimsuit under your clothes and a dry change of clothes in a waterproof tote.
- **Sightseeing tours:** a light top, shorts or trousers, and walking shoes.
- **Boat tours:** a cover-up you do not mind getting wet, because there is no changing room on a snorkel boat.

There is a small trade-off here. The more you prepare for the water, the more you carry. A tote that holds a dry shirt, a towel and sunscreen is worth it. A second pair of shoes usually is not.

For a closer look at one island, the [Bahamas cruise outfits guide](/cruise-outfits-bahamas-heat-humidity-and-one-suitcase/) counts the pieces for a hot, humid port.

Excursion day, planned

### Book the excursion that fits the outfit you packed

Cruise lines set rules for closed shoes, covered shoulders and swimwear on excursions, and those rules are easier to meet when you know the tour before you pack.

- Check the dress and shoe rules for each tour
- See what is included before you choose
- Plan the day around the ship’s all-aboard time

[See port excursions with clear dress rules →](/go/klook/)

Rules differ by tour and by port, so read the details page first.

## Do you change for dinner?

Yes, and the answer needs one boundary. You change out of your pool and port clothes. You do not change into formal wear, unless it is formal night.

Don’t assume you need a tuxedo or gown for every dinner. Think of the evening as the same day with the sun-damaged parts removed: no swimsuit, no sweat-through tee, no beach sandals. What is left is smart casual, and that is a wide, forgiving category.

Here is what changes at six in the evening, and what does not:

- **Changes:** the top, the shoes, the swimwear, sometimes the bottom.
- **Stays:** your hair, your bag, your watch and your hat if you are going straight from the deck.
- **Optional:** jewelry, a scarf, a wrap.

Check your cruise line’s dress code and your sailing’s schedule before packing. The dress code on the schedule is the one you follow. The rest of this page assumes a standard smart casual evening.

If you want the dressy end explained from scratch, the [formal night outfit ideas](/cruise-formal-night-outfit-ideas-when-you-own-nothing-formal/) page starts from a closet with nothing formal in it.

A late flight can leave you changing in a hurry, so a [pre-booked airport transfer](/go/kiwitaxi/) keeps the first evening calm.

## Smart casual dinner outfits for women

Smart casual for women is simpler than the name suggests. Sun dresses, maxi dresses, jumpsuits, or nice capris paired with a blouse work beautifully. Pick one you can walk in and sit in for two hours.

The five outfits I rely on, in the order I use them:

- **Midi sundress** with flat sandals. The easiest one to pack, and it survives a bag.
- **Maxi dress** in a fabric that does not crease, with a light wrap.
- **Jumpsuit** with a belt, which reads as dressed without effort.
- **Nice capris** with a printed blouse and dressy flats.
- **Trousers** with a silk-feel top, for the cooler dining rooms.

Shoes matter more than the dress. Dressy flats, sandals or low wedges work. Skip heels on a moving ship unless you are sure of them, because the floor is not as still as it looks.

Pro tip: pick a dress that works with the same pair of shoes on two different evenings, and the shoe count drops by one.

If you would like to see how a few good pieces cover a whole week, the [cruise capsule wardrobe](/cruise-capsule-wardrobe/) shows how the dinner pieces tie in with the day ones.

If the checked bag is late, your dinner dress is the first thing you miss, and [baggage cover](/go/ekta/) pays for replacements while you sail. Every sailing type is collected on the [cruise outfits](/cruise-outfits/) page.

## Smart casual dinner outfits for men

Men have the easier version, and most of them still overthink it. For men, a polo or collared button-down shirt with chinos, linen trousers, or nice dark jeans is standard.

- **Shirt:** a polo or a collared button-down, ironed by the steam from a hot shower.
- **Trousers:** chinos, linen trousers, or dark jeans in good shape.
- **Shoes:** loafers, clean leather sneakers or dressy boat shoes.
- **Not at dinner:** swim trunks, a wet tee, flip-flops.

Shorts at dinner come up often. They are the most common question about the men’s dress code, and the safest answer is to read your own line’s rule. Many men wear trousers in the main dining room and shorts in the buffet, and nobody comments on either.

A thin linen blazer adds a lot for very little space. It also does a second job in the air conditioning, so it earns its spot twice.

Fold the dinner shirt in the carry-on, and keep [travel cover for delayed luggage](/go/ekta/) in mind in case the suitcase arrives after the ship leaves.

## Formal night: how dressy is dressy

Caribbean cruise formal night is the one evening you plan, and there are fewer of them than people fear. Most 7-day cruises host 1 or 2 formal nights. On a shorter sailing there is often one, or none.

Some guests still choose full black tie. You do not have to. A stylish midi dress, an elegant cocktail gown, or a blazer with trousers will fit the mood without over-packing.

- **Women:** a midi or cocktail dress, or a dressy jumpsuit, with the same dinner shoes plus a statement accessory.
- **Men:** a blazer with trousers and a collared shirt. A tie is optional, and a full suit is for those who enjoy it.
- **Children:** a dress or a collared shirt. Nothing needs to be new.

I did not see many gowns on the nights I paid attention. Most people dress one step up from the normal evening and enjoy the photos. The point of formal night is the photo at the stairs, not the fabric.

**Pro tip:** make the formal outfit out of a normal dinner outfit plus one change, such as a jacket, a scarf or heels. It costs you a pocket of space, not a garment bag.

Formal night is also the best night for photos, so book a [portrait or evening activity](/go/klook/) in port if you want the outfit seen.

## One dress, three evenings

This is the part that saves the most space. A single dress can cover three evenings if you change what goes around it, not the dress itself.

On a week of seven nights, you will want 2-3 dinner outfits you can rewear with different accessories. The dress is the anchor, and the accessories are the variable.

- **Evening one, casual:** the dress with flat sandals and a denim jacket.
- **Evening two, polished:** the same dress with a scarf, a belt and dressier flats.
- **Evening three, formal:** the same dress with jewelry, a wrap and heels, if you wear heels.

For men the same trick works with one pair of chinos: polo on night one, a collared shirt on night two, a blazer over the shirt on formal night.

The limit is a stain. A dress you wear three times needs a fabric that forgives, such as a dark print or a crease-resistant knit. A white cotton dress is lovely for one evening and unforgiving for three.

A dress that survives three evenings also survives a lost-bag day, and [baggage cover](/go/ekta/) makes that day cheaper to solve.

## What not to wear on a Caribbean cruise

The list of things to leave at home is shorter than people think, and it is almost all about the dining rooms.

- **A wet swimsuit or a bare cover-up** at any sit-down meal. Cover your swimsuit before going into dining areas.
- **Beach sandals and flip-flops** in the main dining room in the evening.
- **A heavy jacket** you will carry for a week and use for ten minutes.
- **Shoes you have not walked in**, especially for port days.
- **Too many formal pieces.** You do not need a tuxedo or a gown for every dinner.
- **Anything that needs ironing.** There is no iron in the cabin on most ships, so hang the piece in the bathroom and let the steam from a hot shower work.

Not on the list, but worth a line: jewelry you would hate to lose overboard, and a purse that does not close. A small zip bag beats anything fancy.

Notice what is missing from this list. There is no ban on shorts at breakfast, no rule about hats in the buffet, no demand for stockings. The rules are few, and the easy way to break them is a swimsuit at dinner.

Most of the wrong choices are made at the airport, so [check flights for a day with time to spare](/go/aviasales/) and you can repack calmly.

## The cardigan problem: air conditioning at sea

This is the piece people leave at home. Even though the Caribbean is hot, the ship’s indoor dining rooms and theaters run their air conditioning on high.

The first evening goes like this. You step in from the deck in a sleeveless dress, and in ten minutes you are cold. By dessert you are wishing for a layer.

- **A light cardigan:** the standard answer, easy to carry on your arm.
- **A wrap or a pashmina:** dressier, and good for formal night.
- **A light long-sleeved shirt:** works for both men and women.
- **A denim jacket:** sturdy and casual, good over a sundress.

Keep the layer in your day bag or in your cabin, and carry it to the dining room. It is one of the few pieces that gets used every single evening.

The cold is worst on the first night, so keep the layer in the carry-on and [get a travel eSIM](/go/yesim/) before you board to stay in touch from the ship.

## Shoes for deck, port and dinner

Shoes take up the most space in the suitcase, so I pack as few as the week allows. Three jobs, two pairs, sometimes three.

| Where | What works | What does not |
| Pool deck | Flip-flops or slides | Anything with laces |
| Port, walking | Supportive sandals or sneakers | New shoes |
| Active excursion | Closed-toe sneakers | Sandals |
| Dinner | Dressy flats, sandals or loafers | Beach flip-flops |
| Formal night | The dinner pair, or a heel | Wet shoes |

The pair that does the most work is the supportive sandal. It carries you through a port day, and with a clean outfit it can serve at dinner too. The sneaker handles the excursion, and the third pair, if you take one, is the dressy flat.

Break them in at home. A new pair that rubs at the second port is the one regret I hear more than any other on the gangway.

Your feet decide how a port day goes, so choose the [excursion](/go/klook/) that fits the shoes you have, not the other way round. The rest of the small things are in the [cruise essentials list](/cruise-essentials-list/).

## What to wear by month: December to April

The Caribbean is warm all year, but the months do not feel the same. The questions people type most are the winter and spring months, so I cover those first.

- **December and January:** the coolest evenings of the year. A cardigan or wrap does real work, and long trousers feel good at dinner.
- **February:** dry, sunny and still pleasant in the evening. A light layer is enough.
- **March and April:** warm, with strong sun in port. Hats and shoulder cover matter more than extra layers.
- **Christmas sailings:** expect themed evenings and a slightly dressier crowd. One extra smart piece is welcome.

The same logic holds for the shoulder months. Take the base list in the table below, then add a layer in the cooler months and a rain jacket in the wetter ones. The islands see short showers more than all-day rain, so a light, packable jacket is enough.

Check the forecast for your ports a few days before sailing. The Western Caribbean and the Eastern Caribbean do not always match, and that is a reason to keep the list short and the layers light.

The cooler months change the price of flights, so [compare flights for the month you sail](/go/aviasales/) before you settle the packing list.

## Swimwear and cover-ups: what goes into the dining room

A pool day produces more outfit questions than any other. The answer is one rule. Wet swimwear stays outside the dining room.

Pack multiple swimsuits so you never have to put on a wet one. Pair them with a versatile cover-up, such as a tunic or a sarong, which lets you move from the pool deck to the buffet without changing.

- **Buffet:** a swimsuit under a cover-up is normal at lunch.
- **Sit-down lunch:** add shorts or a skirt and a dry top.
- **Dinner:** the swimsuit is gone, and the cover-up is gone with it.

The mistake to avoid is wet fabric in the cabin. Rinse the suit, wring it in a towel, hang it on the bathroom rail by the vent and have a second one ready. Swimwear in humid air can still be damp the next morning.

The cover-up is the cheapest piece to upgrade. A cotton tunic that also works as a beach dress at a port does two jobs in the same bag.

Beach days and cover-ups go together, and a [beach day or snorkel trip](/go/klook/) is where the swimsuit earns its place in the bag. Hands show in photos too, so see [Caribbean cruise nails that survive chlorine](/cruise-nails-caribbean-colours-that-survive-chlorine-and-sun-cream/).

## Seven nights, counted: outfits per day

A helpful rule of thumb for a standard 7-day cruise is to pack 3-4 swimsuits, 2-3 cover-ups, 4-5 casual daytime outfits, and 2 elevated evening looks. Here is that count laid out day by day, with the pieces that repeat.

| Item | How many | Where it is worn |
| Swimsuits | 3-4 | Sea days, beach ports, water tours |
| Cover-ups | 2-3 | Pool deck to lunch |
| Casual daytime outfits | 4-5 | Sea days and port days, rewear the shorts |
| Dinner outfits | 2-3 | Rewear with different accessories |
| Formal night outfit | 1 | The 1 or 2 formal nights |
| Cardigan, wrap or light shirt | 1 | Dining rooms and theaters |
| Shoes | 2-3 pairs | Sandals, sneakers, one dressy pair |
| Hat and sunglasses | 1 each | Deck and port |

Adjust the numbers to your laundry access and your planned activities. If you plan active excursions, add a second athletic set. If you sail mostly for the pool, add a swimsuit and drop a dinner outfit.

My own habit is to lay the seven days out on the bed before I fold. Whatever I can’t place on a day goes back in the closet. That test removes more clothing than any list I have read. For everything beyond clothes, the [cruise packing list](/cruise-packing-list/) is where I would go next.

Count the outfits, then count the days at the airport: [book the transfer to the port](/go/kiwitaxi/) so the bag is never carried further than it has to be.

## Where dress codes differ: Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Celebrity

The dress code is not the same on every line, and it changes between sailings. Some lines, such as Celebrity, have dressier codes than others, like Carnival or NCL. That is the reason to read your own line’s page.

- **Check the daily schedule:** the evening dress is printed on it, not guessed from the brochure.
- **Check the dining room:** a specialty restaurant can ask for more than the main dining room.
- **Check the formal night count:** it depends on the length of the sailing.
- **Check the enforcement:** some lines are relaxed about it, others are firmer.

The practical solution is the one I use. I pack one outfit that passes at the strictest line I might sail, and I wear it on the evening that needs it. If a line turns out to be relaxed, I wore a nice dress and nobody minded.

Whichever line you pick, the evening rule stays the same. Dress one step above the day, keep the swimsuit out of the dining room, and carry a layer.

Dress codes differ by line, and so do ports, so [compare flights to the departure port](/go/aviasales/) for the line you picked. For how the week runs on one line, read [what changes your week on a Royal Caribbean cruise](/royal-caribbean-cruise-what-changes-your-week-on-board/) and [Royal Caribbean ships side by side](/royal-caribbean-cruise-ships-side-by-side-which-one-suits-a-first-sailing/).

## What to wear on a Caribbean cruise: questions people actually ask

### What to wear on a Caribbean cruise?

Light, breathable clothes by day, such as shorts, dresses and a swimsuit with a cover-up. Smart casual at dinner, a layer for the air conditioning and comfortable shoes for the ports.

### Do you dress up for dinner on a Caribbean cruise?

You change, but you do not dress up much. Most modern cruise lines have moved to a smart casual style for dinner, so a sundress or a polo with chinos is enough.

### What to wear to dinner on a Caribbean cruise?

Women wear sun dresses, maxi dresses, jumpsuits, or nice capris with a blouse. Men wear a polo or collared shirt with chinos, linen trousers or dark jeans.

### What do you wear on a Caribbean cruise on formal night?

A midi dress, a cocktail dress or a blazer with trousers. Full black tie is optional, and most 7-day cruises host 1 or 2 formal nights.

### What not to wear on a Caribbean cruise?

A wet swimsuit in the dining room, beach flip-flops at dinner, shoes you have not broken in, and anything that needs ironing.

### What to wear on a Caribbean cruise for men?

Shorts, tees and swim trunks by day. A polo or collared shirt with chinos, linen trousers or dark jeans in the evening. A blazer for formal night.

### What to wear on a Caribbean cruise in December?

The base list plus a light layer. Evenings are the coolest of the year, so a cardigan or wrap is useful.

### What to wear on a Caribbean cruise excursion?

It depends on the activity. For ziplining, hiking or ATVs, the cruise lines require closed-toe sneakers and athletic clothing. For water tours, wear a swimsuit and bring a dry change in a waterproof tote.

### Do I need a jacket on a Caribbean cruise?

You need a light layer, not a coat. The dining rooms and theaters run their air conditioning on high, so a cardigan or light jacket is the useful piece.

### How many outfits should I pack for a 7-night cruise?

A helpful rule is 3-4 swimsuits, 2-3 cover-ups, 4-5 casual daytime outfits and 2 elevated evening looks, plus a cardigan.

### What shoes should I pack for a Caribbean cruise?

Supportive sandals or sneakers for ports, flip-flops or slides for the pool, closed-toe sneakers for active tours, and one dressy pair for dinner.

If the answer is still “I am not sure what to pack”, [baggage cover](/go/ekta/) is the cheap way to stop worrying about the bag.

### What to wear on a Caribbean cruise in October, November, January, February, March or April?

Dress for the evening, not the afternoon. October and November are warm and humid, January and February have the coolest evenings, and March and April bring strong sun. In every month the base list is the same, and you add a light layer in the cooler ones.

### What to wear on a Caribbean cruise as a woman, and at Christmas?

A woman packs sundresses, a midi dress for formal night and a cardigan. At Christmas add one smart piece for the themed evening. The same list works on an Eastern or Western Caribbean sailing, and on Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Disney ships.

## Key takeaways

The short version, to read before you pack.

- The day splits into deck, port and dinner, and each part has its own outfit.
- Yes, you change for dinner, into smart casual, not into formal wear.
- Cover your swimsuit before going into dining areas.
- Most 7-day cruises host 1 or 2 formal nights, and a midi dress or a blazer covers them.
- Pack a cardigan, because the dining rooms and theaters are cold.
- Closed-toe sneakers are required for active excursions.
- Check your line’s dress code and your sailing’s schedule before you pack.

For the rest of the packing, the [cruise packing list](/cruise-packing-list/) and the [cruise capsule wardrobe](/cruise-capsule-wardrobe/) are where I would go next.
